Thread or Paint?

Is it a rug or is it not? Sometimes it’s pretty hard to tell.

I normally wouldn’t give this a second thought, certainly the pattern on the floor is a rug, but no - it’s actually the work of a decorative artist – Bob Christian. He travels the country painting walls, floors, ceilings, and furniture.

I’ve seen painted rugs before and if done well, they’re fantastic. On the flip slide they are more permanent, and I wonder if the daily wear and tear would stress me out? I bet yes…

Lately they seem to be popping up everywhere… In the Kipps Bay Showhouse there were 2 rooms side by side with geometric painted floors and in Nolita there’s a design shop (the name escapes me), with a fun painted zig-zag floor - all look amazing. This one is featured in the most recent Elle Décor – part of designer Suzanne Rheinstein’s personal home

In this renovation I spent a lot on floors, so there’s no paint in their future, but I’d like to try this someday…The trick is finding the right artist with the skill and experience to pull off the design, without it looking like a craft project, and the right materials that have staying power.

I love pattern painted floors over one solid color, and prefer larger patterns over small. I also love the customizing factor – any color, any shape, any size, and if imagined, it’s always in stock.
