Coffeehouse Chalk Boards…

I’m always drawn to great chalk boards in coffee houses and cafes – pastel colors, artistic doodles, nice handwriting…. I’m not sure what it is about them, but somehow they create an ambiance that makes any place more authentic.

In designing my new kitchen, I made a last-minute decision to work a little chalkboard into the mix - not outward facing as you might expect but inside….

By now you know I’m a big fan of mirrors, so it’s no surprise that some of my upper cabinets are mirrored. Although my first instinct was to mirror the insides too, instead I’ve decided to change it up with chalkboard – the perfect place to leave notes, reminders, lists...

Chalkboard paint may not be quite as durable, so I’m going old school for the real thing. I chose porcelain over slate for the two-for-one bonus – porcelain is also magnetic.

My chalk board is being custom made to size and shipped to my cabinet maker for installation in the shop. This experiment is something new to him and me, but I love trying new things, so I’m excited… I already have a sneaking suspicion this will end up on my must-have list for the next renovation.

Now all I need is some pastel chalk and my artist friend Gabrielle to come by and make mine coffeehouse worthy…

Wow, this sounds like an amazing design for your kitchen. Very creative with the mirrors and chalkboard. I was just thinking of painting a whole large wall in my kitchen with chalk board paint. Not sure what to do there. Just big and empty. Ideas are to fill it with wonderful framed personal pictures and art. Wallpaper just that wall. Who knows where I will end up!
