I Love kitchens… Being in them, seeing them, collecting for them, and designing them. My favorite kitchens are open and airy, so I’m not a big fan of the galley kitchen. Well except one like this...
Having upper cabinets on one side and a windowed counter on the other is a dream. I would LOVE working in a space with light streaming in and a view outside.
This kitchen came to me on cue. While home for the holidays I tagged along to see a fixer-upper for sale. Surprised? It had a similar layout - a long galley with cabinets on one side and an empty windowed wall on the other. At first glance the kitchen seemed small, like half a kitchen really, and with limited possibilities to expand, my first thought was – let’s move it ($$$$$). Followed shortly thereafter by Plan B (“this” $). Functional and lovely, it could be a winner as-is, especially considering the amazing view it would have – trees, a lighthouse, the Chesapeake Bay. With a little imagination, and this image as inspiration, I’m seeing potential…but that’s what renovators do.
When I was small I remember loving my Aunt’s kitchen in Minnesota. She had windows all the way around, just lower cabinets, and tons of thriving violets. I remember the way I felt in that room – really, really good. Well here it is again…in my imagination only.<>
