Above It All…

I love transom windows. I had my first experience in Baltimore with the traditional over the door variety, and I’ve been hooked ever since. My absolute favorites are the working, lean-in kind. Originally used for ventilation, they look cool too…

This kitchen is more interesting and light with a row of transoms above the cabinets. What a great way to let light travel, create depth, and mix things up a bit. BUT honestly, the best part happens at night - when the light from one room illuminates the other. For me this is architectural sex appeal at its best.

I’m working on a kitchen now with this in mind. In fact I shared this image with my client and he loved it. His apartment is loft-like and there’s a pantry behind the kitchen, so we’ve got a golden opportunity to make this happen.

Can’t wait…

I never thought about the transoms allowing more light from the other rooms; I can see how that would be very sexy!

I just finished reading a book on Japanese homes with small space solutions and the common denominator in all rooms was lots of natural light and I can see how the transoms would allow that during the daytime as well as the artificial ilght at night.
