I’ve often thought I would love a little get away place someday. Ideally it would be fairly close so you can get there easily. A Paris apartment would also be tempting, but that’s not right around the corner...
A one level space with a large open room for living and entertaining would be great. The kitchen would be the focus with a big table. For sleeping, Murphys or bunk beds would be perfect for guests.
For the architecture simple is fine – a peaked roof with amazing windows or doors on both sides, so you can see straight through, and a feature window over the front and back doors. I’m also picturing flowers, which I know very little about taking care of, other than that I love them…
While I was in the Hamptons a few weeks ago I saw “it” - in cedar shakes with a big round architectural window front and center. I was tempted to slam on the brakes and stop the car, but there wasn’t a good place to stop. Lucky for me I have a wonderful friend, Gabrielle - she rode her bike by and snapped this shot. Thanks Gabrielle!
I saw “it” again in the opening pages of Veranda. Flipping ahead, there is no full sized picture, just this little one, but you get the idea… I love it. Ballroom like, it’s actually a pool house, but in reality it’s just perfect….
When I think of my get away place, I don’t dream of anything massive or elaborate – just a simple space renovated well with character. Oh and amazingly decorated for fun and relaxation…
So that’s my dream… Yours?

Oh Kelly, that is beautiful. I wonder if those wooden doors actually shut to protect the glass doors. That would be such a nice idea for a pool house.
I am not sure if they are just for style or if they are functional. They would be great in bad weather. They also add a lot to the design.
