Cutting Corners

Corners are often overlooked, and they frequently pose a problem for many. Just what should you put there?

If you learn to look at these small spaces differently, you will realize the value they can bring to a room. I frequently use corners for closerts - it's easy. Two doors, molding, and minimal drywall and you have it.

The extra storage is always a plus, but by cutting off a corner you will also change the architecture of your room - a basic rectangle becomes a lot more interesting. Place your closet opposite the entrance to create an interesting focal point. The key is to use a set of doors with character to maximize the look.

Once you have a corner closet you will always want at least one, if not more. Take a look at this one in the bedroom - I added a small desk and made use of untapped storage space 10 feet up. It's almost like finding space you never knew you had...

I suggest strolling through your space, finding an empty corner, and giving this idea a try. You won't regret it for a minute.

Wow, that looks great. I love the doors and the molding you used.

As I recall, you created a corner closet in your Manhattan apartment that aired on SSBS.

For future posts, I'd love to hear about your process of shopping for vintage windows, moldings, etc for your new space.

Yes I had a corner closet in my studio shown on SSBS which I used for clothes. The etched doors on the desk shown here were originally on that closet, but I took them with me when I moved. They are coming with me again to the new space. Stay tuned...

Yes I plan to capture the shopping phase for the next space as I go. I already have a stock pile of salvage left from the last renovation and from shopping since then. As you can see I am always collecting for the next one...

I have been searching the internet for office closets, and yours is by far the best. Office clutter--especially in a bedroom or in my case a studio apartment--is too jarring and disruptive.

You did an outstanding job.

Thanks

Thank you! I love having some clutter, especially office related clutter, as long as there is a good place for it. A corner is perfect for that.
