Holiday Decorating & Color…

In getting ready for the holidays this year, I am dipping back into the childhood archives color-wise…

Growing up we always had a tree that looked different than anyone else’s. It had to be the real thing and flocked with spray snow, but rather than white or colored lights, we had pale blue ones. My Mom didn’t have any blue in the house, so I’m not sure why she chose that color other than maybe she also grew up with it. I’ll have to ask her…

I’m not sure exactly when or why, but at some point we changed to the expected – no snow, white lights, a mix of ornaments, and much more red. Today as she did back then, Mom really goes all out decorating for the holidays in every room and outside. It looks fantastic, but I still remember the blue…

As colors go, I’m not a big a fan of red for the most part, so I’ve either gone in the pink or green direction or to clear glass and silver. This year I plan to do the same, but maybe I’ll throw in a little blue as a nod to what we had growing up.

In this month’s Martha Stewart Living, you see the silver and green – very soothing and pretty. Sign me up…

I’m hosting book club soon. It’s been 9 years with the same original members and I’m on apartment #3. This is the month I’m finally hosting again after a very long renovation break. Originally I planned to host in September but had to cancel as I was not ready. I’m still not, but ready enough…

When you host in December a lot more goes into the decorating than usual. I’ve considered keeping it elegant and super simple. A tree with a topper, white lights, and balls – nothing more. I had also planned to hang a grouping of Martha’s tissue paper pom poms from the ceiling to simulate snow.

My inspiration came from an article I read years ago featuring guy who kept it simple with just white lights, but instead of one tree he had a cluster. His apartment was absolutely magical. It looked like an indoor forest. I’ve remembered it for years… Someday I’d like to try that, but this year I have my hands full with just the one or maybe one plus a Charlie Brown tree.

I’ll let you know where I land…

I always go back and forth with myself as to whether I should keep using all white or change up to colored lights that I remember from my childhood. It is a tough decision every year.

The thing about white is you can never tire of it.... When I went to buy new lights this year I had a hard time finding white with the green cord in stock. They had colors and twinkles, and white with white cords, but plain and simple was hard to find. I ended up buying more than I needed, so I'm set for a while...
