The Right Stuff…

This weekend I found another keeper in the Plaza Hotel basement...

The basement? Yes, usually I'm not a fan of being underground, but this is truly the exception.

Todd English just opened a food court, or in upscale terms, a Food Hall branded with the double PP logo. Not like the ones you see in a mall, this one in my opinion is a BEST OF EVERYTHING food bar.

The concept is specialty stations open with stools, so you can belly-up bar-style and enjoy the prep. And there’s no need to hop around from bar to bar - sit at any one and they’ll bring whatever you want – literally…

The sky is the limit - they have everything you can imagine… The oyster bar sits front and center with loads of fresh seafood, surrounded by 6 others – sushi bar, a burger bar, a dumpling station, pasta, brick oven pizza, plus salads, cupcakes, homemade bread, fine cheese, and chocolates. If you want it, it’s probably there. Yummy food and one better – surprisingly it doesn’t come with the typical Plaza price tag.

And then there’s the design by Jeffrey Beers, classic and pretty...mosaic floors, marble bars, lots of mirror, good lighting, flowers, candy, even the food for sale looks like art. There’s also a station for tastings and live food demonstrations – fun too. Needless to say I was impressed and can’t wait to go back.

I went with a girlfriend of mine who just moved into the Plaza, and although not intended, we made an afternoon of it - lunch first, followed by the coffee bar for dessert. She BTW is soooo lucky, being able to pop down on a whim, but having THAT just an elevator ride away could be dangerous …. She called last night and said she's been several times already. No doubt. Living at The Plaza without a kitchen during a renovation would be a piece of cake.

So go if you can, and you’ll leave happy. Also check out the coy fish in the Lilly pond – big and very fun to watch.
